ABINGDON, Va. — Purdue Pharma L.P., the maker of OxyContin, and three of its executives were ordered Friday to pay a $634.5 million fine for misleading the public about the painkiller’s risk of addiction.

Former press baron Conrad Black doesn’t have to go jail, but he can’t go to his home in Toronto until a federal judge receives additional assurance that he will return for his Nov. 30 sentencing.

Former media mogul Conrad Black may remain free on bond pending sentencing on his conviction for swindling the far-flung Hollinger International newspaper empire he once ran out of millions of dollars, a federal judge ruled Thursday.

The next big job for Conrad Black’s enemies could be finding his money. Following the former press baron’s fraud conviction, the U.S. attorney’s office could seek as little as $2.9 million or as much as $60 million from Black in penalty forfeiture, plus a $1 million fine.

The latest additions to the front lines of security at Chicago’s airports have more often been seen stopping shoplifters at Target and Wal-Mart. Guards earning $7.50 an hour for Universal Security Corp., a Chicago firm with limited aviation experience, have been patrolling O’Hare and Midway airports since June 1.

Illinois increased its technology exports abroad by more than $1 billion in 2006 over the previous year, a 20 percent growth rate. That strong performance outpaced the national 10 percent growth rate, according to a new report that will be released today by the American Electronics Association.
